FTL vs. LTL: How to Choose
Compare shipment size, handling, schedule, risk, and cost structure before selecting a service.
Shipment profile
FTL generally fits larger shipments, dedicated trailer use, sensitive freight, or tighter schedules. LTL generally fits smaller palletized shipments that can move through shared terminal networks.
Handling and risk
FTL usually reduces intermediate handling. LTL may involve transfers between terminals, making packaging, labeling, and accurate freight characteristics especially important.
Decision factors
Consider pallet count, weight, dimensions, stackability, delivery timing, commodity sensitivity, access requirements, and total landed cost—not linehaul price alone.
